Since 2002 Michael De La Garza has owned and operated a consulting firm, MDLG + Company, a professional strategic public affairs, marketing and communications consulting firm. Previously, De La Garza served as Sr. Vice President of Marketing, Advertising, and Public Affairs for Laredo National Bank. And before that, for 15 years he was Vice President of Public Affairs & Corporate Communications for H-E-B Grocery Company, the 10th largest grocer in the United States. While there he developed a reputation as an exemplary public affairs professional, exhibiting a high concern and personal commitment to the community by immersing himself in a myriad of civic and business leadership roles.

During the tenure of his business he has also been employed by a number of companies, including CPS Energy, where he served as Manager of Local Government Relations for San Antonio’s municipally owned public electric and gas utility. He was instrumental in successfully securing a customer rate increase in 2010 from San Antonio’s City Council that was absolutely vital to CPS Energy’s operations. Before accepting this assignment, De La Garza served as Manager of External Relations and Corporate Services for Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Texas, where he directed the construction and grand opening of the Toyota Visitor Center, as well as the execution of a citywide Clean-Up project undertaken by 400-plus Toyota employees that garnered national Toyota recognition and praise as a community services “best practices” effort.

Upon graduating from Central Catholic High School De La Garza received a four-year scholarship to Harvard, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government in 1982. He received his Master of Arts Degree in Urban Studies from Trinity University in 1989.

A native San Antonian, De La Garza is a seasoned public relations and marketing practitioner, with extensive corporate experience in developing and executing community outreach and marketing programs designed to influence targeted audiences towards a preferred action or attitude. He is a strategic thinker, who extends his talents as a facilitator and consensus builder. De La Garza is an involved and committed San Antonio civic leader who strives to make his community a better place to work and live.

De La Garza has served in a number of leadership capacities as a volunteer for a myriad of organizations, including chairmanship of the San Antonio Education Partnership, as well as chair of the Alamo Workforce Development Board. He served as Rey Feo in 2000, having raised over $350,000 in college scholarship monies, Also in 2000, Philanthropy World magazine honored him as a Texas Honoree for his work with Texas non-profit organizations. He also participated in the 2006/2007 United Way of San Antonio Masters Leadership Program.

De La Garza is the proud father of his daughter Rebecca, a recent Master’s graduate of the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and now vice president for state and federal advocacy at the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
